Are you still dreaming about the perfect destination for your December vacation in India

I completely understand the struggle.

There are so many places to explore, each offering its own unique charm, and let’s be honest, the year-end deserves a special celebration! With the crisp winter air and the promise of festivities, December is an incredible time to discover the magic hidden in India’s landscapes.

Here’s a personal take on five must-visit places in December 2024 that’ll make your holiday unforgettable. All these are my personal favourites, as I have enjoyed them immensely during December.

Kochi, Kerala: A Perfect December Vacation in India

Ah, Kochi! Nestled between the mesmerizing Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, this city is a beautiful blend of culture, tradition, and modernity. If you've never experienced Kerala during the winter, you’re missing out.

Imagine yourself strolling along serene beaches, the salty breeze kissing your cheeks while you watch fishermen casting nets into the Arabian Sea. A cup of spiced tea in hand makes it even more perfect.

One of my fondest memories is exploring the historic streets of Fort Kochi, lined with European-style buildings that seem to whisper tales of the past. Additionally, one of the best aspects of visiting Kochi is that several towns like Munnar, Varkala, Poovar, and Kovalam are nearby. You can plan a week's vacation to explore Kerala.

The backwater exploration in Poovar or the black sand beach in Kovalam—every part of Kerela has something unique for the tourists. Trust me, a December vacation in India is incomplete without soaking in the essence of Kochi!

Also, if you are a fan of fresh seafood, then this is a place to be. Not just that, the hot chips are another thing that I loved in Kochi. I am sure you must have heard about the banana chips, but have you tried the crispy bitter gourd chips? They are delicious, and the best part is you can get them packed, and they remain the same for days. There are so many varieties to choose from; you must try them if you visit Kerela.

Moreover, the hotels, such as Le Meridian, Novotel, Four Points, and Grand Hyatt, will make your stay luxurious. But not to worry if you prefer slightly budget-friendly hotels, then I would suggest Sealine Beach Resort, Ibis, Holiday Inn, and Sea Lagoon Health Resort.

Best Ayurvedic Massages

The Ayurvedic massages and treatments are yet another thing you cannot miss when in Kerela. After a stroll by the beach, you can relax with a head massage or a full-body massage. Their technique, mixed with the therapeutic oils, will leave you completely relaxed. There are various treatments as well that you can opt for; they include morning yoga, massages, and an ayurvedic balanced diet.

Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

If you’re someone who dreams of golden sands stretching as far as the eye can see, Jaisalmer should top your list. I can’t think of a better place to escape the chill of December than basking in the warmth of the Thar Desert. When I first laid eyes on Jaisalmer’s iconic sandstone architecture, it felt like stepping into a fairy tale. The golden hue of the forts and havelis catches the light beautifully, making for an absolutely surreal experience.

Jaisalmer offers a range of must-see attractions, from the Gadisar Lake and the intricate architecture of Patwon Ki Haveli to the bustling Sadar Bazaar and the unique Desert National Park. At the heart of it all stands Jaisalmer Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last remaining "living forts," where residents still call the fort home. The fort opens at 9 am and has a nominal entry fee of INR 50.

This blend of history, culture, and vibrant life makes Jaisalmer an unforgettable destination.

And let’s not forget the luxurious desert camps, complete with cultural performances and mouth-watering Rajasthani cuisine. Waking up to a golden sunrise in the desert is something you just have to see for yourself. Trust me, this part of your December vacation in India will leave you happy.

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

There’s something deeply spiritual about Varanasi, a city that breathes tradition, faith, and serenity. When I visited Varanasi for the first time, I was overwhelmed by the powerful aura that surrounds the ghats. Watching the evening Ganga Aarti, with its flames illuminating the night and chants echoing across the river was an experience that’s difficult to put into words.

Along with its spiritual faith, the city is also famous for its silk. You must have heard the infamous ‘Banarasi Saree’ or the silk shawls. The best part is the authentic feel wherein you visit a shop, sit on mattresses, and choose the silk suits or sarees. Try not to go over budget because you will be captivated by the quality and designs of the sarees.

Another good thing about Varanasi is its food. The street food is beyond amazing here. Be it ‘Kachori Sabzi' or ‘choora matar,’ the list is endless. Moreover, nothing can beat the taste of hot kachoris on a winter morning. We have all heard about the famous ‘banarasi paan;’ even Bollywood has made a song on it. Varanasi street food stalls can be found all over the city with delicious, lip-smacking options. Imagine enjoying a stroll on the streets of Varanasi on a cold December morning with Kulhad chai to sip on. Isn't it the best feeling?

There are some amazing options for hotels in Varanasi, but if you are looking for a camp-style stay, then Om Vilas is an ideal choice. You can also opt for Double Tree, Ramada, Radisson, and Taj Ganges.

Varanasi

December is the perfect time to visit because the misty mornings add a mystical touch to the city. The sunrises along the Ganges are breathtaking. You can take a boat ride and watch the city come to life, with priests performing rituals on the banks and devotees taking their sacred dips. It’s as if time slows down, and you become a part of something much bigger. A December vacation in India should include this spiritual awakening in Varanasi for sure.

Kolkata, West Bengal

Kolkata, or the “City of Joy,” as many lovingly call it, holds a special place in my heart. Visiting Kolkata in December is like diving into a cultural fiesta. The weather is pleasant, making it a great time to roam around and soak in the city’s vibes. The Howrah Bridge, lit up against the backdrop of the winter sky, is an awe-inspiring sight, and the boat rides on the Hooghly River feel almost poetic.

The food scene in Kolkata is unbeatable, especially during winter when the city’s streets come alive with flavors. I still dream about the hot puchkas (pani puri), tangy and spicy, that left my taste buds dancing.

December also brings the city’s famous Christmas festivities, centred around Park Street, with beautiful lights, carol singing, and celebrations that uplift your spirit. It’s a true December vacation in India that you won’t soon forget!

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh: One of the best places for December Vacation in India

If a snowy escape is what your heart desires, then Shimla is the answer. As a lover of all things winter, I found Shimla to be a true paradise in December. The snow-capped mountains, the scent of pine trees, and the old-world charm of Mall Road make for an enchanting experience. There’s something magical about sitting by a fireplace, sipping hot cocoa, and watching snowflakes gently fall outside your window.

Early Mornings at Mall Road, Shimla

The scenic beauty of reaching Shimla is in itself a great experience, especially in December. The mall road hits differently on cold winter mornings; everything looks so pristine, covered with white snow.

I experienced my first snowfall in Shimla, and it’s a memory that feels as vivid as if it happened yesterday. We were sitting in a small, cosy restaurant, enjoying lunch, when we suddenly heard excited shouts from outside. Someone yelled, "It's snowing!" and, just like that, everyone abandoned their meals and rushed outside to see the magic. People left their plates just as they were, and for those few precious minutes, nothing mattered but the wonder of snowflakes falling around us. Fifteen minutes later, we all returned to our tables, picking up right where we left off, with not a single dish disturbed. They must be aware of the excitement among the tourists, especially experiencing the first snowfall.

If you want to stay at Mall Road in Shimla, then Hotel Combermere is the best choice. They have luxury and standard suites. The food is also good here, and you can choose to dine in the sun on the rooftop seating. There is a lift that can directly take you to Mall Road, where you can stroll through the streets and enjoy hot ‘gulab jamuns.’

If you want to experience a luxurious stay in a picturesque setting, then the best hotels to stay at Shimla are The Oberoi Cecil, Wildflower Hall, and Clarke Hotel. You can also choose from various AirBnb and homestay options.

Whether it’s the historic Christ Church or the thrill of ice skating at Asia’s oldest rink, Shimla has something for everyone. And for the adventurous, Kufri, just a short drive away, offers snow sports that’ll make your heart race with excitement. A December vacation in India doesn’t get more dreamy than this!

So there you have it—five incredible destinations to visit in December 2024. Each place offers something special, and the memories you make will be cherished for a lifetime. Whether you’re craving adventure, spirituality, or cultural immersion, these destinations promise to make your December vacation in India one to remember.
