Budget travel is all about finding ways to see the world while keeping costs low. It does seem limiting, but once you start discovering how much you can save by making small changes, you'll realize it's completely doable. From skipping luxury hotels to learning how to take advantage of travel points, there are plenty of strategies to make your travel dreams a reality.

In this guide, I’ll break down how you can save money in four key areas: accommodation, transport, food, and activities. By making small changes in each aspect, you can significantly reduce the overall cost of your trip. Also, don’t miss out on the budget travel tips I’ve included throughout the post!

The best budget travel tips when you don't want to spend much.
Budget Travel

Accommodation: Staying for Less

When it comes to budget travel, five-star hotels and resorts are often one of the biggest expenses. If you’re serious about saving money, search budget-friendly hotels—there’s no room for debate. Instead, staying in homestays, rentals, or even Airbnb is the go-to option for budget travellers. Hostels can cost as little as 5% of the price of a hotel, making them a perfect choice.

Recently, I went to Kerela, and the place had a lot of impressive homestay options in the same lane as the best hotels. The best part of homestays is that you can experience local dishes and really get to know new people and their cultures. I have heard some of the best folklore stories from the locals.

There are certain Airbnbs that offer the best views and are budget-friendly. Do check the reviews of the place before booking.

Pro tip: Always check if your accommodation offers free breakfast. This can save you a meal's worth of expenses daily.

Transport: Getting Around on a tight-budget

Transportation is another area where you can save a lot. Walking, biking, and using public transport should be your primary modes of travel. Avoid taxis and rideshares unless absolutely necessary—they are massive money-drainers. For longer distances, buses and trains are much cheaper than flying.

I remember a cycling tour I took in Paris. It was the best way to visit all the local attractions. Also, we all bonded over lunch and sat at local cafes; it became the best part of the trip.

One of the cheapest travel option could be by trains..

Similarly, most of the places now have excellent metro connectivity. Singapore has one of the best public transport systems. It is very convenient to use and has connectivity to the major tourist spots.

By taking public transport, you can save a lot of money on your vacation.

When you do need to fly, book your tickets far in advance to avoid last-minute price surges. Another option is to use budget airlines but be mindful of extra fees for checked baggage. I recommend travelling with just a carry-on to avoid those costs.

For the extreme budget traveler, hitchhiking can also be a free way to get from place to place, though it carries risks and isn’t reliable everywhere.

Food: Eating on a Budget

Food is one of the easiest aspects of travel where you can save money. Start by avoiding fancy restaurants and instead opt for local street food, which is often much cheaper and just as delicious. At beach locations, the shacks are the best place to have a meal. They use fresh produce, which is not that expensive. Plus, if you talk to the locals there, you might get yourself a tour guide for free.

Another great way to save is by taking pre-cooked meals with you. If you’re staying in a hostel or Airbnb, look for accommodations that offer kitchen access. This can drastically cut down on dining costs.

Pro tip: Always check if locals are eating at a food stall or restaurant. If they are, it’s a good sign the food is both affordable and tasty. These places or stalls also give you an authentic taste of their local dishes.

Activities: Making the Most of Free Experiences

One of the best things about budget travel is how many free activities are available. Many cities offer free walking tours, which not only help you save money but also give you an opportunity to learn more about your destination. Museums often have free or discounted entry days, and natural attractions like parks and beaches are free to explore.

A simple Google search of “free things to do in [destination]” will yield plenty of options. When planning your trip, always prioritise these free experiences to keep costs down.

If you're in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and planning to visit one of the nearby islands, taking a jetty is a common option.

However, many of the islands are interconnected by nature trails, making trekking a great alternative for those who enjoy hiking and exploring the scenic beauty up close.

Trekking offers stunning views and allows you to experience the diverse flora and fauna along the way. Depending on the island, you can choose from several well-marked trekking routes that vary in difficulty, offering a more adventurous and immersive way to travel between islands. Along the way, you will meet a number of other like-minded hikers.

Timing is Key: Travel in the Off-Season

A great tip for budget travel is to plan your trips during the off-season. Popular destinations tend to hike prices during peak tourist seasons, but if you visit during the quieter months, you’ll save on accommodation, flights, and even activities.

For example, visiting Europe in the winter or Southeast Asia during the rainy season can lead to significant savings. You’ll also avoid the crowds, making your trip more enjoyable and relaxed.

Best Countries for Budget Travel

While there are affordable travel destinations all over the world, some countries stand out as particularly budget-friendly. Here are a few examples:

  • Thailand

A favourite among backpackers, Thailand offers beautiful beaches, rich culture, and affordable accommodations. Cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai are popular for their vibrant backpacking communities.

  • Vietnam

Known for being one of the cheapest countries to visit, Vietnam offers stunning landscapes, delicious food, and a rich history. The best attractions in Vietnam, like temples, beaches, and national parks, are either free or charge minimal entry fees.

  • Morocco

Offering a unique mix of African and Arab cultures, Morocco is another affordable destination. With friendly locals and incredible landscapes, it’s perfect for budget travellers seeking adventure.

  • Indonesia

Located between Southeast Asia and Oceania, it is made up of thousands of islands. Indonesian street food and local eateries (known as warungs) offer delicious meals at very low prices. You can eat well on a budget by enjoying traditional dishes like nasi goreng (fried rice) or mie goreng (fried noodles).

Airfare can be one of the biggest travel expenses, so booking early can save you hundreds.

Avoid international roaming charges by purchasing a local SIM or eSIM upon arrival.
