priyadudeja96

Have you tried snorkeling, sea walking, and scuba diving? If not, then you are missing out. The ‘zindagi na milegi dobara’ experience that Hrithik Roshan had after diving is so real. And the best part is that you can experience these underwater activities even if you are not an expert swimmer (like me.)

As someone who was a bit hesitant at first, I can tell you—once you’re in the water, there’s no turning back. It’s truly a window to another world, one where fish dance around you and vibrant corals greet you as if you’re an old friend. India, with its diverse coastline and hidden underwater gems, offers some incredible spots for snorkeling. Here are the top snorkeling spots in India that promise an adventure you won’t forget.

1. Andaman Islands: The Best Snorkeling Spots in India

The Andaman Islands are often called paradise on earth—and they live up to the hype, especially for snorkelers.

Best Snorkeling Spot in India: colorful fish and coral reefs in the clear waters of Havelock Island, Andaman Islands.

Havelock Island

Havelock is the go-to spot in the Andamans. The white sandy beaches and the clear, turquoise waters make it ideal for a first-time snorkeling experience. The marine life here is nothing short of breathtaking, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by schools of colorful fish and vibrant coral gardens.

Havelock Island Beach Resort

I tried scuba diving, and it was amazing. The trainer and the scuba diving spot were right across the resort where I stayed, which was Havelock Island Beach Resort. This makes it incredibly convenient too. You can easily rent scuba diving gear, but be sure to book your slot in advance, as they tend to fill up quickly. The guides are patient, and they really hold your hand all the time underwater. The best part is that you will get your video underwater, whether it is scuba diving or snorkeling. The entire experience will be captured as video and pictures and will be given to you. So, you won't miss anything that you saw underwater.

Elephant Beach

This is again one of the best snorkelling spots in India. Along with snorkeling, you can also try your hand at sea walking. It is an amazing experience to walk on the base of the vast blue ocean, surrounded by colorful fish and corals, etc. I even held a sea cucumber in my hand; it was exhilarating. So, if you are visiting Elephant Beach, do try sea walking and get amazing videos of you walking in the ocean. I went to Havelock Island first, so by the time we tried water activities at Elephant Beach, I was a little more open to the experience.

To reach Elephant Beach, you can rent a speedboat from Havelock. It would take around 25 minutes to reach, and the way is as mesmerizing as it can be. If you are more of a trekking enthusiast, then you can also trek your way to The Elephant Beach.

Cinque Island

This island is located in the South Andaman region. Cinque Island is a bit of a hidden gem. I still remember the thrill of seeing black corals for the first time here, a sight that you don’t get at many snorkeling spots in the world. The waters are so clear that you can see the seabed from the surface, making it a magical experience.

You can take some time to stroll along the picturesque shores of Cinque Island. You can enhance your experience with a range of activities, including swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. This location is teeming with marine life, offering anglers the chance to reel in Barracuda, Grouper, Red Snapper, and more. You can also go fishing, but the island has a strict policy of ‘catch and release.’

The fishing yachts have restrooms and beds for relaxation, and refreshments are also provided along the way.

Red Skin Island

Another gem in the Andamans, Red Skin Island offers a rich snorkeling experience. The diversity in marine life here makes it ideal for those looking to explore India’s underwater beauty in all its glory.

Why Visit: With its clear waters, rich marine life, and accessible snorkeling spots, the Andaman Islands stand out as a premier snorkeling destination in India. You’ll leave with memories (and photos) that will last a lifetime.

Also known as Pigeon Island, Netrani Island is perfect. If you’re new to snorkeling and want a family-friendly destination, then this place is an ideal choice for winter holidays. The marine biodiversity here is exceptional; during my visit, I remember spotting butterflyfish and clownfish, species that were completely new to me.

It is located in Murudeshwara, a temple town in Karnataka. Both deep diving experts and beginners can try underwater activities here. The guides and experts are there to help and even take quick sessions to help beginners.

Netrani’s waters are gentle and clear, making it easier to see marine life up close.

Why Visit: The warm, clear waters of Netrani are home to an incredible variety of marine species. The calm conditions are ideal for beginners or families looking for an easy, relaxing snorkeling experience.

Grand Island in Goa offers an accessible way to snorkel in India without venturing far from popular tourist spots. It is an ideal snorkeling spot in India, and the best time to visit is between mid-October and April when the water is clearer.

4. Lakshadweep: The Coral Atoll Paradise

Lakshadweep’s coral reefs are some of the most vibrant and beautiful in India. Known for their untouched beauty, these islands provide an underwater experience unlike any other. I still recall my first dive at Agatti Island—it felt like being in an underwater jungle, where every turn brings a new surprise. The coral reefs here are teeming with life, making it a must-visit for snorkeling aficionados.

Kadmat Island

Kadmat is a popular snorkeling destination in Lakshadweep, known for its incredible reefs and blue lagoons. The island’s serene environment and rich underwater ecosystems make it ideal for snorkelers seeking a peaceful adventure. You can rent various water sports equipment, like kayaks, pedal boats, sailing yachts, ski boats, and glass-bottom boats. The island’s scuba diving centre has also become a popular spot for water sports lovers.

You can stay in huts facing the lagoon and lined by beautiful coconut trees.

Nestled in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, Tarkarli is a lesser known but wonderful snorkeling destination. Its serene blue-green waters make it one of the best spots for beginners. The location’s peaceful environment makes it perfect for those looking for a quiet yet fulfilling snorkeling experience.

Why Visit: Tarkarli offers a serene and beautiful snorkeling environment, ideal for beginners or those wanting to explore a lesser-known snorkeling destination.

Planning Your Snorkeling Adventure

Each of these destinations offers unique marine experiences, from vibrant coral reefs to encounters with rare fish. Here are a few tips I picked up from my own snorkeling trips across India to help make your journey smooth and enjoyable:

  • Choose the Right Season: Timing can make a difference. You can plan to visit these spots during peak visibility months for the best experience. For example, October to April is ideal for most locations.

  • Use Quality Gear: Whether you’re renting or buying, make sure your snorkel, mask, and fins are in good condition. Good gear can make or break your experience. Although most of the time the gear is provided by the resorts or the diving companies, it is a good idea to be thorough with the equipment.

  • Learn Basic Snorkeling Techniques: Before diving in, try learning a few basic techniques, like how to clear your mask if it fogs up or handle the snorkel to avoid gulping water.

  • Stay Calm and Respectful of Marine Life: It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the beauty, but staying calm lets you enjoy the experience fully. Respect the marine life around you—avoid touching corals or disturbing the fish, as these ecosystems are delicate.
